One year ago this week (FG17, March 4, 1999) we were getting all excited over the recent Japanese launch of Sega's new Dreamcast, and though the machine wasn't about to arrive on these shores for another eight months, we went ahead and reviewed one of the flagship launch titles, Sega Rally 2.
Ant Grimley reviewed the game for us and thought this of it: "The control is great, with analogue throttle and braking in addition to steering. The Arcade mode will keep you busy for a while, as will the Time Trial mode, which you can master after you've finished with Arcade. In the meantime, you could be storming your way through the 10-Year Rally Championship, getting a new motor for placing first each year. Trouble is, you'll have to start meddling with the car set-up in the later years to finish the course, never mind place first."
Though good, the game didn't quite live up to our expectations and scored a conservative 85 per cent. One year later and our opinion of the game has slipped further. It's still a great arcade conversion but we can't help feeling a little bit disappointed and would score the game 75 per cent today.
