Great Videogames Through The Ages
Leaderboard (C64)

Whether you think it's a good walk spoiled or not, the fact remains that golf translates well to computer and one of the first examples of just how well it can be done appeared in the mid '80s in the shape of Leaderboard.

The game pioneered all of the control methods that are now standard in golf games, most noticeably the swingometer where the player hit the fire button to start the backswing and hit the button again to make the shot when the meter returned to the indicator line. Miss the line by either pressing the button too early or too late and you'd either hook or slice your shot. The great thing about Leaderboard was that it actually rewarded your skill at club selection and stance, as well your ability to hit the button at the right time.

It sold by the bucketload and was subsequently translated to all the popular 8bit micros of the day, before enjoying a healthy spell of success on the following 16bit machines. It wasn't until the arrival of the Mega Drive that Leaderboard was surpassed by PGA Golf on home consoles and Links on PC, both of which took the basic game design, refined it and continue to be popular today. We salute the game that brought golf to the masses though - the wonderful Leaderboard.
