Metal Gear Solid breaks records

Konami’s spy sim enjoys huge sales

Konami’s eagerly awaited epic Metal Gear Solid finally went on sale last Friday, and it quickly became the fastest selling PlayStation game ever in the UK. More than a million units shipped in Europe on February 26, including 250,000 in the UK alone.

Konami have said that 67,245 copies were shifted on Friday and Saturday. The previous fastest seller, Resident Evil 2, sold 59,081 in the corresponding period (figures courtesy of Konami, mind you).

Whatever, Metal Gear Solid is the first PlayStation blockbuster of the year, despite the worries of certain retailers that the game might suffer from the number of imports and pirate copies already in circulation. The RRP of £39.99 has apparently not been undercut in any stores, though many have offered value added extras such as a soundtrack CD or memory card.
