Great Videogames Through The Ages
|
| GoldenEye (N64) |
It's relatively new, but Rare's spy 'em up is already worthy of a place in the Great Videogames Through The Ages hall of fame because it's so good.
In one-player mode you'll find the tension, excitement and sheer brutality all combine seamlessly as you take on the role of James Bond and work your way through mission after mission of 007 action all loosely based on the film (and book) of the same name.
But even better than getting a sniper rifle and zooming in on a yawning Russian guard, and despatching him with a bullet in his temple, is the multiplayer mode. Four-player, split-screen Quake-esque frenetic action is the order of the day as everyone scrabbles around for lasers, machine guns and the glorious 'one shot to kill 'em' Golden Gun. The attention to detail is fantastic, the level design superb and the gameplay sublime. Rare are currently putting the finishing touches to the game's follow-up Perfect Dark which, even if all it manages to be is more of the same, promises to be yet another 'must have' N64 game. Indeed, if you don't own an N64 and are looking for a good excuse to buy one, GoldenEye is that excuse. Altogether now: "Ah Mr Bond, I've been expecting you".
