| What people in the industry really play |
|
Chris Johnson (GT Interactive)
|
Chris is the producer of the forthcoming 40 Winks on PlayStation and N64. He has previously worked on Space Hulk, Prince of Persia and various racing games. Every few years Chris likes to break away from making games and live in the real world for a while. This has lead to an interest in going to hot places, surfing and learning to make killer cocktails.
What games are tickling my fancy at the moment?
I must say that playing through Half-Life on the PC has been thoroughly good fun - it's entertaining to have a story and some depth of character. Multiplayer Half-Life and Team Fortress are just sheer adrenaline-pumping mayhem. GT's very own Driver has also grabbed my attention. I wasn't personally involved in the development but I have been lucky enough to scream through most of the game in my spare time, there's something about it that makes it impossible to put down.
What was the first computer game you ever played?
One day a friend of mine brought round his ZX81 with Scramble. Once we got the tape deck sorted out we had hours of fun, it was a whole new world. Those black-and-white days, eh? I don't miss them at all!
Any particular favourites from yesteryear?
I do go back and play Bubble Bobble and International Karate + from time to time.
What has been the biggest videogaming letdown for you in the last year?
That would have to be Buggy - I got hold of the PC version and was very disappointed. The game could have been so much more, I was thinking it would be more fun than Buggy Boy, but alas, no.
Any titles that you're really looking forward to in the near future?
Well, Perfect Dark and Donkey Kong have to be on the list, Rare games are always rewarding. Re-Volt from Acclaim might do for me what Buggy couldn't.
When all's said and done, what's your favourite game ever?
Oh, probably something like Moon Cresta, because it's the game I'd always go and play in an arcade. Even today, I love to play it - sheer simplicity and reactions. The technology coming along now is pretty amazing, but the personal experience of those old games cannot be superseded.
