| Pirates, Porn and Drugs |
Dear Future Gamer
I just received your excellent mag (FG39) today, and was absolutely astounded to hear ELSPA's latest comments regarding piracy. FG38's "Genocide" shenanigans were bad enough, but to say that people who deal in pirated software are also likely to be "peddling hard drugs and pornography" is absolutely ludicrous. I'm not a pirate; I never have been and never will be. However, ELSPA are taking completely the wrong route with this whole piracy awareness business. As far as I can see, their comments have just encouraged yet more scorn from existing pirates, plus a loss of respect from the general games playing community.
Frankly, even though piracy is illegal and shouldn't be tolerated, trying to mount a Daily Mail-esque blatant propaganda-oriented campaign against piracy shows a lack of respect for gamers in general, suggesting they're going to be roped in by these tired over-exaggerations. I have no respect for ELSPA now. And to think, I would have been on their side.
Jimbo
FG:
I'm with you, Jimbo. Although I applaud ELSPA for what they're trying to do, their latest campaign is the crassest thing I've seen in years. It's absolutely appalling and I'm sure it's doing them a lot more harm than good. Let's hope they haven't got the money to continue with it for long and we can all forget about it and move on.
