The Hacker
Papers and periodicals perused...

Wraparound adverts cuddle the industry's trade papers this week. MCV features an eclipse-style cover for Sega's Dreamcast console (bright light shining behind the moon and all that), together with a rather optimistic pay off of "Up to 6 billions players". CTW sport a huge render of Croc 2 on the front, while pages two and three feature an advert for the game. Someone's got a bulging wallet. Or did have...

Skip on to page five and CTW lead with news of ELSPA's new 'hard-hitting' campaign against piracy. "Don't play games with criminals. It will end in tears," screams the header, which is backed by a picture of a youngster with a droplet falling from an eye. The campaign aims to make people aware that "80% of people convicted of computer games piracy are involved in drugs, prostitution, theft or other crime." A staggering percentage, The Hacker thinks you'll agree (and it makes his name seem rather flippant, too). Sorry, everyone.

Anyway. Activision are thinking big. According to CTW, they aim to become a billion dollar publisher within the next two years, and they're linking up with Fox Sports, part of the News International Group. "We now have the assets to move in on EA Sports and this is just the very beginning," said Activision's Bob Dewar. "Of course, we'll be releasing a football game eventually, but only when the time is right and this is at least 18 months away. You need Sky branding to go up against FIFA because it's the only other credible sports licence and we've got that now." Well, it's the only credible sports licence apart from, say, the Carling Premiership, UEFA, Michael Owen, Ronaldo, NBA, NFL, R2D2...

MCV lead this week with news that Dixons' underachieving computer stores brand @Jakarta won't be expanding nationwide just yet. While some 80-100 stores were expected to materialise, only five have been opened, and it's thought @Jakarta aren't competing well against the likes of EB and Game.

Conversely, a German retailer is planning an assault on the UK, MCV reckon. Media Markt already boast some 100 stores across Europe and, by heavens, they're heading to Blighty. Curiously, the picture on MCV's front page of one of their stores looks a bit like Arsenal's Highbury stadium. You didn't hear that here, though. Right?
