Who He?
|
| Shigeru Miyamoto |
|
Creative Director, Nintendo of Japan
|
Miyamoto is without doubt the most successful game designer of all time. He started out at Nintendo as a staff artist in 1977, after graduating from college with a degree in industrial design. His first two years with the big N were spent designing arcade machines - not the games themselves, but the cabinets in which they were housed. It didn't take Nintendo long to realise that Mr Miyamoto was meant for better things.
He soon established himself as a game character designer and spent his spare time coming up with ideas for completely new games; ideas that were firmly rejected by Nintendo. But then came a stroke of luck - a project was due to get underway and all the regular designers were busy elsewhere. Somebody suggested that Miyamoto could probably do it, so they gave him a programmer and soon Donkey Kong was born.
In 1985, Miyamoto created the very first Super Mario game, another series that's still going to this day, and his name became synonymous with quality. He hasn't made a bad game since. In fact, he hasn't made a game that isn't great.
You've probably enjoyed a couple of Miyamoto's games yourself - Super Mario 64, Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time, Star Fox... the list goes on, and not one dog among them.
If only we could clone him...
