'Brit firms get City lift' is weekly trade paper MCV's lead header this week. UK interactive entertainment companies on the London Stock Exchange are set to receive a financial boost. How? A new section on the Stock Exchange called TechMark will group technology companies together under a dedicated FTSE index in the main market listing. This basically makes them easier for analysts to locate. Something like that, anyway. TechMark kicks off next month, and although games companies won't be involved from the off, they should be listed in this section in the near future.
Scurrilous rumours surrounding a possible further delay to the launch of Dreamcast have been scotched by Sega, according to MCV. No way Jose, do we want another delay! Also, a PlayStation for nowt? MCV report on the News of the World PlayStation giveaway which gives readers the opportunity to register for an NEC mobile phone and receive Sony's console free and gratis. That makes £64.99 look expensive! Still, the phone probably costs a blinking fortune.
There's been a mass walkout at Infogrames-owned DiD studio, according to MCV. Thirty one employees have resigned, apparently. They're thought to be unhappy at the enforced move from Warrington to Manchester. Heck, it's only about 15 miles...
CTW lead with news that Sony have refused to improve trade margins on software in the run-up to Christmas. Basically, what this means is that even though many retailers are selling PlayStation games for £30, they're going to make bugger all profit unless Sony improve the margins. Which they're not going to. One shadowy insider told CTW: "They (Sony) were telling us, the publishers, exactly where we are with PlayStation and how we can move forward. Their stance was, well, PlayStation2 is coming but we haven't given up on PlayStation."
Also in CTW, news of BAFTA's Interactive Entertainment Awards. Half-Life and Zelda: Ocarina of Time have scooped the most nominations, with Zelda being nominated in four categories and Half-Life in three. The awards take place on October 20 at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London. For a full list of the nominations, check out http://www.bafta.org.
