Great Videogames Through The Ages
Speedball 2 (Amiga)

Although there was no roller skating, the fact that you had two armoured and violent teams throwing a steel ball around an enclosed arena in an attempt to score goals meant that the Bitmap Brothers' original Speedball was always going to be compared to the James Caan film Rollerball.

It wasn't really like Rollerball though, but it was a bloody good game. Then came its sequel and that was even better. Imagine an intense two-player five-a-side football game with dirty tackling allowed and you're somewhere near to what Speedball 2 was like to play. With power-ups aplenty, sumptuous graphics and fine-tuned gameplay, it was no wonder the game found fans in the thousands.

The Bitmaps are currently working on the follow-up to the game, Speedball 2000, for the current crop of consoles, and we at Future Gamer are very keen to get our hands on a copy and get stuck in once more.
