Daikatana Definitely Coming

This one is still on the way and we've played with a half-finished version

It was more than two years ago when Id Software programmer John Romero (known for his work on Doom and Quake) left the company to form his own development studios, Ionstorm Entertainment. Funded by Eidos, the software house were to create the ultimate in first-person shooters, a game called Daikatana that, using existing Quake engine technology, would take the already saturated genre to new heights with the introduction of an enhanced multiplayer mode, a storyline and RPG elements.

Two years later and the game, save for a recently released deathmatch demo, is nowhere to be found, but Ionstorm assure their followers that it's coming, and soon. The good news is that it's also coming to N64 courtesy of publishers/developers Kemco, and considering all the delays associated with the PC version, we wouldn't be surprised to see the 64bit incarnation of the title arrive first.

Daikatana follows the adventures of Hiro Miyamoto (yes, partly inspired by the master game designer himself) in the year 2455. Miyamoto is the athletic grandchild of Dr Toshiro Ebihara, an archaeologist who discovers a legendary Daikatana that acts as a nexus through time and space, giving whoever holds it the power to travel through time. Unfortunately, before Ebihara can put the sword to good use, he's murdered by his evil assistant who plans to travel back in time and steal the work of the scientist who discovered the cure for AIDS, unfairly reaping fame and fortune.

We've had the chance to sit down with the N64 version of the game, listed as being 50 per cent complete, earlier this week at Nintendo's Spaceworld show in Japan. Though only a few levels were playable, we got a very good idea of what to expect, and we must admit that we're very impressed with what we've seen so far. More news soon.
