Molyneux Sounds PSX2 Warning

Lionhead supremo warns that PSX2 development will be tough

Game design supremo Peter Molyneux has launched a broadside across the bows of UK developers with the warning that developing for PlayStation 2 will demand bigger teams and greater financial commitment.

The Bullfrog founder and now grand fromage at Surrey-based Lionhead Studios was one of the delegates at the recent PSX2 DevCon event in Cheshire, where the machine's complexities were revealed to UK developers. "More structure within British development teams will surely be needed and games will necessitate much more work," Molyneux told trade paper MCV. "I doubt if there will be many UK-developed titles for its European launch. I think it will take a while to really get going, but with the impressive power on offer it would be foolish to rush out titles that didn't exploit it."

What will this mean for PlayStation 2? A batch of rushed titles or a dearth of games at the machine's launch? Sony haven't been particularly worried in the past about the quality of some games developed by third parties. Witness the recent 360 and Dreams.
