Papers and periodicals perused

Bit of a quiet week as far as the trade papers are concerned. Still, Sony's unveiling of the PlayStation2 in Tokyo stole one or two of the headlines. Okay, all of them. Both weeklies devote the whole of their front pages to PlayStation2.

MCV feature a picture of PlayStation2 in the upright position (you can lie it on its side if you so wish), together with a special report from Tokyo. CTW do the same and list European third-party support and games currently in development. The highlights are expected to be Gran Turismo 2000, New Ridge Racer and Tekken Tag Tournament.

CTW's Ronnie Dungan had this to say of PlayStation2: "The design alone is a huge step forward in taking games further into the mass market. It's the first games console not to look like a games console and because of that Dreamcast already looks dated before it has even had a chance to establish itself properly." Lawks. Come on Dreamcast, prove 'em all wrong.

CTW also report on Dreamcast's deal with Internet search giant Excite. "The fact that they're (Excite) part owned by BT meant it made a lot of sense for us to go with them, coupled with the fact that they have an extremely well established online community which fits in with our vision of Dreamcast," Sega's Nicola Aspin told CTW.

Hey, there's a danger some folk are going to forget that a smart new console is actually going to be on the shelves in a couple of weeks.
