This week, The Market for Home Computing and Video Games (MCV) lead with the headline 'Euro Force Becomes Global Giant' referring to Infogrames' takeover of GT Interactive. Also making front-page news this week is the story about Microsoft possibly jumping into bed with electrical High Street retailers Tandy to create their own retail concessions in the UK. The software giants already have some 7,000 'store in store' slots with Tandy in the US, where Tandy trade as Radioshack. If the scheme goes ahead, it's likely the stores will sell MSN access, web TV, Windows CE devices, mobile solutions and consumer software.
Rival trade paper CTW (The Entertainment Computer Trade Weekly) also devote their main front page story to the Infogrames buyout of GT Interactive. They also give front page space to the news that Acclaim have taken an equity stake in the ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling) federation, which means they now have a long-term exclusive publishing deal with them. Elsewhere, the paper report that Eidos plan a £3 million pan-European marketing campaign for their forthcoming Tomb Raider IV game, with a whole £1 million of that earmarked for the UK alone. Crikey - they think they've got a winner on their hands!
