Despite the failure of others with VR HMDs, Sony introduce high-end $599 Glasstron headset
Sony are doing some interesting things, and all of them see the company poised to take over the videogame entertainment world in the next two years, but their last creation has us stumped. Despite a 100 per cent failure rate for all other hardware companies who have attempted to make a VR headset, Sony have now thrown in their two cents. Today, Sony announced the Glasstron audio/video eyewear Head-Mounted Display (HMD), a lightweight, personal theatre that works just like a mini TV, but attached to your head.
Fitting like sunglasses and weighing a third of all other HMDs (at 3.5 ounces), the Glasstron plugs into almost any video source, and costs a mere $599 (about £360!). Gulp. Available in November, the Glasstron can be connected to any NTSC video source, such as TVs (with an audio/video output), Sony portable DVD players, VCRs, Handycam camcorders and, not surprisingly, PlayStations.
The Glasstron has two half-inch LCD screens that sit in front of each of the viewer's eyes, and it projects the equivalent of a 52'' big-screen, as seen from a distance of six and a half feet. The HMD sends 180,000 pixels onto its two little screens and apparently provides clear, precise video images to the wearer. Stereo sound travels through built-in earphones and is adjustable with manual volume controls.
Whether this unit will fly is anybody's guess, but you can bet that upgrades, or even the next versions of this HMD, are more likely than not to fit into Sony's bigger electronic campaign to rule the world.
