Sierra Studios line-up |
Eight games including Half-Life add-ons and Homeworld to showcase at E3.
Sierra Studios, part of the Sierra/Havas family, announced their E3 gaming line-up today. Among the highlights of the line-up are two Half-Life products, the Homeworld game, and a new Caesar III-style strategy game called Pharaoh. Here is the complete list:
Half-Life: Opposing Force
This expansion pack returns the gamer to the Black Mesa Research Facility, this time as one of the grey, camouflaged soldiers assaulting the place rather than the meek and mild-mannered scientist, Gordon Freeman. Along the way the gamer will encounter new experimental and alien weapons as well as combat a brand new alien race opponent. New multiplayer maps are also promised.
Team Fortress 2: Brotherhood of Arms
Meanwhile Valve Software's next project is Team Fortress 2, a full-blown, standalone game that will take its cues from the Half-Life universe. The game will feature nine unique character classes, such as medic, sniper, grunt and heavy weapons chap. Multiple types of online gameplay are promised, including spy missions, deathmatch, and capture the flag.
Homeworld
Relic Entertainment's Homeworld, one of the surprise head-turners at last year's E3 show, will once again make an appearance, though this time it should be a lot closer to completion. Homeworld is a realtime strategy game, but what makes it different is that it is a true 3D game and is set within the deep reaches of outer space. This presents a double challenge, as gamers will have to manage an evolving fleet of craft - similar to a base with a lot of units in a more traditional RTS game - as well as navigate through the 3D environs of deep space.
SWAT 3: Close Quarters Battle
Just announced today, SWAT 3: Close Quarters Battle is the third instalment in this relatively successful police strategy game. Sierra are promising such details as motion-captured actors and photographic likenesses for the characters' faces, suggesting a more tactical, in-depth game that's closer to Rainbow Six than the vaguely RTS-type game that was SWAT 2.
Pharaoh
Remember Caesar III? It was an awesome strategy game that combined the best elements of city-building a la SimCity 3000 but within the confines of the ancient Roman world and with the additional threat of invaders and Imperial disfavour. This time around the game is set in the beautiful and majestic era of the Egyptian Pharaohs, letting you build truly monumental architectural wonders such as Sphinxes and Pyramids to celebrate your virtual glory as a ruler. Beware the invading Assyrians and the plague of frogs, however.
Babylon 5: Space Combat Simulator
Almost unnoticed amidst the flurry of Phantom Menace hype, the Babylon 5 TV series is still plugging along, and Sierra is still at work on its Babylon 5: Space Combat Simulator game. Based on the ships and races created for the TV series, the game will be a first-person 3D space combat game.
Orcs: Revenge of The Ancient
We've already posted a story on this game, but just in case you missed it, here it is again: Sierra are making a 'fighting orcs' game based on the JR Tolkien Middle-Earth licence. You'll be able to train and equip up to four Orcish warriors and then take them out into battle against other Orcs as you struggle to the top of Sauron's armies. It's being developed by Berkeley Systems.
Gabriel Knight III
Adventure game Gabriel Knight III: Blood of the Sacred, is still under development (designed by Jane Jenson) and will be shown again at this year's E3 show. This could very well be the last of the big budget, high profile Sierra adventure games.
