500,000 Systems Sold, and Counting!

Sega of America have sold over half a million consoles to date

Sega of America have announced that the Dreamcast has now sold an astounding 514,000 units after only two weeks at retail. Even after the most successful console launch ever on September 9, Sega continue to break records.

In the official press release issued earlier this week, comparisons were made in terms of sales to PlayStation and Nintendo 64. It took over four months for Sony's machine to hit the 500,000 mark, with Nintendo's machine taking two months. Sega went on to state that not even the Apple iMac computer rivalled their latest console's performance, having sold only 278,000 units after six weeks on sale. Similarly, DVD managed just 430,000 units in its first year.

Chris Gilbert of SOA commented on their success, saying, "Consumer demand for Sega Dreamcast is continuing at a record pace. All of our retailers are reporting huge sales for the system and we're working very closely with them to meet the massive demand we're anticipating for the holiday season."
