Defender of the Crown Goes Portable

Game Boy Color programmer sets out to convert the classic Amiga/C64 game

Over the weekend, emulation site Emu Camp posted an interview with Game Boy Color programmer Charles Doty, whose current project is to convert the classic Cinemaware Commodore 64/Amiga/Apple IIGS strategy action title Defender of the Crown to the portable system.

"It's a relatively simple game, so porting it to the Game Boy Color won't be much of a problem," said Doty in the Emu Camp interview. "I can't tell you how many times I've heard people rave on about Defender of the Crown, so I figured people would also be interested in it." According to Doty, he will take the existing Commodore 64 code and graphics and port the game to the Game Boy Color.

In Defender of the Crown you had to conquer territories in England by playing mini-games such as jousting and catapulting. The game featured a very cinematic art style, which was synonymous with the now-defunct publisher of the game, Cinemaware.

It seems he's doing this just as a pet project as there was no talk of a publisher in the interview, but we're sure that if there was enough interest then the project would be snapped up promptly. Doty is also interested in porting over the other two games in the Cinemaware line, Rocket Ranger and Three Stooges.
