| Nintendo win General Electric appeal |
US power giant General Electric lose patent infringement suit against Nintendo
The Federal Circuit Court in Washington DC has unanimously affirmed a summary judgement in favour of Nintendo in a patent law suit brought by General Electric. "We don't give in to claims we believe have no merit, no matter how large and prominent our adversary may be and even if the financial stakes are enormous", said Nintendo of America’s chairman, Howard Lincoln. "We’re gratified Nintendo’s position has been vindicated".
General Electric had claimed that some of Nintendo's most successful videogame products infringed patents, which GE had acquired from media giants RCA in the mid-'80s. In the suit Nintendo asserted that General Electric's dated patents had no application to Nintendo’s products and that GE's claims were baseless.
On Wednesday (July 9) the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals agreed Nintendo did not infringe any of those patents, some of which included Game Boy technology.
