Mario is most popular game ever

Nintendo release numbers for their biggest selling games around the world

Nintendo 64's most popular game to date is also their very first: Super Mario 64. Nintendo Co. Ltd. released official sales figures for their biggest selling games around the world today, and everyone's favourite Italian plumber topped the charts with a combined total of more than 10 million units sold. That makes Super Mario 64 the most popular next-generation videogame ever.

Mario even had a hand in Nintendo's second best selling N64 game, Mario Kart 64. Approximately 7.7 million units of the 3D kart-racer have been sold so far, with a surprising 1.98 million of that tally coming straight from Japan.

However, Mario was by no means alone in his popularity. Strong numbers from Rare's GoldenEye earned the first-person shooter the number four position for best-selling N64 game thus far, with more than 6.52 million units sold worldwide.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, released only six months ago, has already sold more than 7.1 million units and it's still going strong. The game should have no problem catching Mario Kart in the coming months.

The official lists are as follows. Note the difference between overseas sales (US and Europe) and Japanese sales.

1. Mario Kart 64 - 1.98 million
2. Super Mario 64 - 1.78 million
3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - 1.45 million
4. Pokemon Stadium - 1.37 million
5. Yoshi's Story - 990,000

Overseas Nintendo 64 Software Sales

2. GoldenEye - 6.52 million
3. Mario Kart 64 - 5.72 million
