| Namco Still "Unable to Commit" to Dolphin |
Hurt feelings over past dealings with Nintendo may prevent full support of new console
A story from MSNBC.com suggests that Nintendo's next generation console may not get game development support from Namco, one of the world's largest producers of interactive entertainment. Namco president Masaya Nakamura was said to be unwilling to commit his company's resources to the Dolphin because of lingering bitterness stemming from Namco's fall out with Nintendo several years ago.
At one point in the 1980s, Nakamura had a falling out with Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi over Namco's production of NES cartridges. Since then, the relationship between the two companies has remained strained. This is demonstrated by the fact that Namco have exclusively produced games for the PlayStation, including hits like the Tekken and Ridge Racer series.
However, there may be a silver lining for N64 owners interested in Namco titles. There is evidence that the relationship between Namco and the big N may be thawing with news that the Japanese game-makers have licensed Ridge Racer for the N64 and that they'll be releasing a Pac-Man game for the Game Boy Color. Perhaps the most promising sign of a resolution is the fact that the Dolphin will use the DVD format - or rather, it won't be using cartridges.
