Dear Future Gamer
Personally, I think Sony have nothing to worry about when it comes to the X Box. Sony cannot be crushed into the dust by Microsoft, like other companies. Microsoft have the money. Microsoft have the 'people'. Microsoft have the business know-how. Yet I still don't think it's going to be little more than what the N64 is to the PlayStation now, if not worse. I don't think Microsoft have any third-party developers designing for it. No-one had seen, heard or mentioned the X Box before last week. This cannot be a good thing.
And who the hell came up with the name X Box? That had best be a code-name if they want anyone to buy the damned thing.

Whether Sony have anything to worry about or not remains to be seen. You can bet your bottom dollar though that Microsoft are well aware of the amount of money, time and effort it's going to take to launch a new console globally, but if they think the risk is worth it then they'll go ahead. As for having third-parties designing and developing for the machine, a name like Microsoft is weighty enough to convince most developers that they'll recover their development costs even if the machine's a flop. And yes, X Box is merely a working title - we all expect it to change at some point.
