Brazilian Judge Bans Six Games

Judge claims that videogames inspire real-life violence

Doom, Postal, Mortal Kombat, Requiem, Blood, and Duke Nukem have all been made illegal for further sale in Brazil - by order of Judge Claudia Maria Resende Neves Guimaraes. Guimaraes also gave the federal government 120 days to establish a rating system for videogames.

Although Brazilian federal judges have the authority to make such proclamations, they are difficult to enforce and the makers of the videogames will probably try for an injunction.

In her ruling, Guimaraes cited a recent Sao Paulo movie theatre shooting, in which the gunman claimed he was inspired to kill by Duke Nukem. The decision is not the first of its kind in Brazil. In 1997, Carmageddon was banned, because the objective was to run over and kill as many people and animals as possible.
