Two US Retailers Begin PS2 Pre-Orders

Just like with Dreamcast last year, hyped-up retailers start the madness early

Electronics Boutique and Babbages retail stores yesterday started taking pre-orders for Sony's PlayStation2, a console that's not even scheduled until fall 2000.

With a $10 down payment, American gamers who don't want to import their PlayStation2s for a ghastly amount of cash can guarantee their own PS2, which is temporarily priced at $390 (a rough yen-to-dollar conversion that does not represent the actual price).

Sony Computer Entertainment America has yet to announce the North American price of the new console, but it's believed to cost about $299 at minimum, the same price the first PlayStation sold at in 1995.
