| Cold Shoulder from Acclaim |
Key N64 supporters plan to protect themselves from the console's inevitable demise
There aren't any Horsemen of the Apocalypse galloping up and down the halls of Nintendo of America's headquarters just yet, but the Nintendo 64 is definitely headed towards its own judgement day with news that Acclaim Entertainment are ready to pull back their support of the system. In their most recent report for the first fiscal quarter of 2000, Acclaim and Chairman/CEO Gregory Fishbach publicly backed away from reliance on the console.
"As the interactive marketplace evolves, we are focused on strategic initiatives designed to build our business for the future," said Fischbach. "We have enhanced our in-house development capability to take advantage of the growth in the industry as a result of the launch of the next generation console systems. We have expanded our release schedule and reduced our dependence on the Nintendo 64 market."
Acclaim have already committed to creating games for the next Nintendo console, codenamed Dolphin, and the company still have a pack of N64 games scheduled for release, including a fourth shooting game set in the Turok universe.
Acclaim's sales figures for Nintendo 64 products dropped dramatically in the first fiscal quarter of 2000, compared to the same period last year. Software for Sega's Dreamcast bolstered the company's bottom line somewhat, but it seems Acclaim's commitment to the Nintendo 64 didn't produce enough return.
The company will be releasing more titles in 2000 than in 1999 and we'll have more on all of Acclaim's games as we get details.
