3dfx step into the limelight

3dfx Interactive spend $20 million launching themselves

PC gamers demand 3D hardware acceleration these days and one of the companies at the forefront of providing such acceleration have decided they've spent enough time hiding their light under a bushel and have opted to launch their own brand of add-ons.

Current 3dfx Interactive releases include the Voodoo family of chip sets, Voodoo2, Voodoo Graphics and Voodoo Banshee. The new Voodoo3 chip set will be the first with the 3dfx brand. "3dfx has developed the strongest name in 3D graphics acceleration by creating leading technology, establishing allegiance among major game developers and being the first to brand itself to end users," said 3dfx's President and CEO Greg Ballard.

What does this mean for us gamers? Essentially, if you're looking for a 3D graphics card you can now walk into a shop and buy a card that has '3dfx' on the box. It may not sound like much, but in the minefield world of non-standard PCs it makes things just ever so slightly less confusing. 3dfx's Voodoo3 cards will be available in the next couple of weeks for £149.
