Square Commit to WonderSwan

Final Fantasy go portable yet again as Bandai score Square for their handheld

According to recent reports, Bandai and Square have entered into a deal that enables Square to create WonderSwan versions of their big-title PlayStation games, such as Romancing Saga, Seiken Densetsu and Final Fantasy. These portable renditions should be available some time next autumn in Japan. The deal will also enable Bandai to begin selling their WonderSwan system in the US next year.

What isn't clear yet is how this deal with Square has anything to do with Bandai's ability to release the system stateside. Earlier this year, Bandai entered a distribution agreement with Mattel that gave Mattel the rights to release the portable system in the US, and the company have yet to comment on whether or not they will market the black and white handheld.

We'll be keeping an eye on the WonderSwan market and release situation, both in the US and here in Europe.
