Gran Turismo 2 Set to Slide into 2000

Despite Sony sticking to December 10 date, US retailers unanimously report GT2's delay to 2000

Gran Turismo 2 really is set to miss its December 10 ship date after all. Major US retailers have all indicated that the game won't hit stores until January 20, 2000 at the earliest, and it may even arrive as late as February 20. This may mean the game will be delayed over here too.

Despite all of the retail noise, Sony Computer Entertainment America officials remain steadfast on their original release date of December 7, 1999. PlayStation Store officials backed this claim from Sony, saying that Gran Turismo 2 would be ready and on their shelves by December 10.

The plot has thickened with the news that PlayStation Store representatives were showing off eight copies of the latest version of Gran Turismo 2 at the recent SF International Auto Show in the US. The version wasn't complete, but more than 23 courses were playable in the time trial mode.

It seems that despite the game's incomplete state, Sony executives already have their marketing dollars, advertisements and hype machine backing the December 10 date in the hope of catching the biggest season of the year.

Keep watching to see if this is one time trial that could defeat them...
