Mod Chip Hits Europe

Beware, Dreamcast owners, those dodgy mod chips have returned to infect our beloved console!

The Dreamcast has been on sale for just over a month in Europe, but a mod chip has already been developed for the system. According to a number of European magazines, an online mail order supplier (which will have to remain anonymous) is charging approximately £27 for the technology, which, when set up in the DC, will allow you to play import games.

Similar to the mod chips available for PlayStation, fitting the chip requires soldering and immediately invalidates your Dreamcast's warranty. However, now that such a chip is available, certain retailers will most likely be offering to fit the chip themselves. If you're thinking about having a chip fitted, bear in mind that these shops tend to have little in the way of electrical engineering experience and could permanently damage your console.

If you're really desperate to play the latest games from Japan, we suggest you pick up the Japanese machine, which is fairly cheap these days. Should you choose the easier path, you could be left with a broken Dreamcast. Now, wouldn't that be a shame?
