Trading cards withdrawn after Nazi confusion
Nintendo have decided to discontinue a couple of Pokémon trading cards following complaints from the Anti Defamation League. The Golbat and Ditto cards feature a red 'manji' mark, a symbol that resembles a reversed swastika.
The manji is an ancient Japanese symbol that represents good fortune and is used on street maps to show the location of Buddhist temples, in much the same way that we would use a cross. Mealy-mouthed Middle America didn't see it this way, insisting that it was indeed a Nazi swastika. Nintendo hadn't even authorised the cards for sale in the US - the Japanese-language cards were imported without approval. Seems like the kids really have "gotta catch 'em all."
