Dreamcast Links Up to Japanese Televisions

Captions, pictures... television becomes interactive next year through DC

As recently revealed by online news service Nikkei Net, the Dreamcast will be able to receive data broadcasts that accompany TV programs from the middle of next year. Console owners will need to purchase a special tuner that interfaces with the Dreamcast, allowing it to receive all the data. A price for the adaptor has yet to be determined, but it should be less than the £50 to £100 asking price for other tuners.

The system is currently on trial at 50 hotels in the Kanagawa Prefecture as part of a joint effort with Tokyo Broadcasting System Inc. and Asahi National Broadcasting Co. Future plans call for Dreamcasts to receive data transmissions by broadcast satellite, in addition to the terrestrial data transmissions, when services start at the end of 2000.
