Sony To Distribute New PlayStation2 Disc

Hands up all those who don't want multi-region DVD...

Sony plan to appease the movie industry by releasing a new utility disc for PlayStation2. As of next week, Sony will deliver the new disc, free of charge (we should bloody well hope so!), in exchange for the old one that was sent out with 1.25 million consoles. They haven't specified the total cost of the exercise but it must be at least a few million quid.

But who's going to take them up on the offer? "Hello Sony! I don't want a multi-region DVD player really. Could you please make sure that I can only play region two discs?" Unlikely.

The only way that people will return the old discs is if Sony make out that there's a problem that will spoil gamers' enjoyment. Alternatively, they could introduce a bit of code on future titles that will make them incompatible with the old drivers, but that would just be plain mean.
