Star Wars Racer Cancelled

LucasArts refocus resources on Star Wars Racer but still have big plans for The Phantom Menace

LucasArts confirmed that they have cancelled Star Wars: Episode 1 Racer for the PlayStation. Development has been on hold for the last few weeks and it's unlikely that LucasArts will make any further public announcements about this transgression.

"It's true," said a LucasArts representative. "I can't elaborate on this any further than that, except to say that it's likely that the game wouldn't have been available in a reasonable time frame. If you look at the sales data on it, Racer has certainly been a viable product."

With this is mind, we asked whether the PlayStation version of The Phantom Menace would suffer the same fate. "The Phantom Menace is not in danger. There is, however, a new date frame for it. It's now due in September, which is more realistic. We don't anticipate that slipping any further."

LucasArts' official statement says: "While succeeding in both commercial and critical acclaim for the PC and N64 versions of Star Wars: Episode I Racer, LucasArts Entertainment Company will not proceed with the extension of the game for the Sony PlayStation platform. Instead, the company is refocusing its resources in anticipation of new titles, both Star Wars and original, for current and emerging platforms."

Star Wars: Episode 1 Racer is currently available on both the Nintendo 64 and PC.
