Sega Respond to Lawsuit

Get the latest on Media Optik's lawsuit

Some new information has surfaced regarding the lawsuit that Media Optiks have filed against Sega for allegedly unrightfully using Media Optik's technology in Dreamcast hardware. Sega made a response to the accusation today, stating that they don't believe the technology used in Dreamcast infringes on any patents, but will withhold formal judgement until they have seen the official lawsuit documents.

After news of the lawsuit, Sega shares today dropped by a startling 11.68 per cent, which is below their daily trading limit on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

As mentioned in yesterday's update, a similar suit was filed against Sega by Media Optik several years ago, claiming that the Saturn had been unrightfully using the same technology. In that case, Sega requested official lawsuit documents and never heard back from the company. It's possible that history will repeat itself here.

"We have not been contacted regarding the suit and would like to see the official documents before we make a judgement," Sega said. "We are confident there has been no patent infringement in this case."

We'll be back with more as it happens.
