Epic's Unreal Plans for PlayStation 2

PC developer Epic Megagames adapting Unreal Tournament for PlayStation 2

Impressed with the specs from Sony's upcoming system, Epic Megagames have plans to adapt their Unreal Tournament engine for Sony's PlayStation 2, according to Games Business magazine's August 1 issue.

Although other publishers have sought to license the Unreal engine for both the PC and PlayStation 2, Vice President Mark Rein made his intentions clear. "It's safe to say that if we go through with the effort to create a PlayStation 2 engine, we will do a game for that system," he stated. "Until you try and make a game yourself - working out all of the glitches and bugs - you can't license it to anyone else because it's not proven technology."

About three years ago, Epic Megagames showed keen interest in creating a 64DD version of Unreal, but interest in the 64DD and its capabilities dwindled, and eventually Nintendo decided to can it in the US. Since then, with the exception a short-lived Unreal to PlayStation rumour, no indicators have linked Unreal with any other systems.

"We weren't going to think about consoles until they got powerful enough," Rein continued. "The big thing for us is RAM and raw CPU power. The PlayStation 2 is going to deliver both. By contrast, the Dreamcast is powerful enough from a graphics standpoint, but we haven't been as impressed with the available RAM in that system."
