TGS: New PlayStation2 Onimusha Details

Capcom bring Onimusha to PlayStation2

Taking the Resident Evil formula further than ever, Capcom are enlarging the scope and status of its ancient Japanese warrior game Onimusha: The Demon Warrior, which has officially been transferred to the PlayStation2.

Capcom's move doesn't come as a surprise, but it's certainly applauded as the game will receive extra attention to graphics and more alterations to the RE 'survival-horror' theme. Gameplay shots we saw at a special screening showed far more user control, including battle scenes, as well as platform-style puzzles. The gritty-looking intro movies, all in black and white, showed traditional Shogun warriors in hand to hand combat in muddy fields, suffering bloody and agonising deaths. Nice. All of the pre-rendered backgrounds are in the process of being changed into polygonal, texture-mapped settings, and the characters will appear in far more detail than before.

In addition to the central ninja character's main weapon, he can use an item called the 'Demon Head' that works as both a weapon and a shield. More weapons, including several blades, knives and possible projectiles are apparently being worked on.

Onimusha is tentatively scheduled for a winter release, but it's likely that the game will come out in summer 2000.
