How exactly does this strange new Resident Evil/light-gun hybrid feel and play?
Capcom's new game puts you in the first-person perspective, hands you a gun and pits you against hordes of zombies. As the only survivor of a helicopter crash near Raccoon City, you take on the role of a clueless visitor to the always-bustling zombie town with which everyone is so familiar.
We played the game using Namco's Guncon, complete with one trigger and A and B buttons alongside the barrel of the handgun. To move forward, you press and hold the trigger down. To move left, you press A; to move right, press B. To activate doors, pick up items, or use various items, you press the trigger button. Bullets aren't wasted in these situations, and nor are they when you press and hold down to move forward.
You can look up, down, left and right, and walk or run, just by moving the gun around. While it sounds a bit weird, the game still retains the Resident Evil feel as you search for items, such as keys, herbs, film footage, ammo, new weapons and more. From the footage we played, four zombies attacked at once, and later on an onslaught by two lickers was barely survived.
Load times don't prove to be any better than, say, Resident Evil 2, and graphically the game could use more work, with lots of pixels and rough-looking textures blotching up the corridors. Of course, Gun Survivor isn't complete yet, so a good tuning is still in store for this seemingly normal game that throws a twist into the Resident Evil series.
Frankly, it felt a bit weird - like playing a slow game of Doom in Raccoon City. Mostly, the adventure aspects of Resident Evil seem simplified to shooting and more shooting, but are we being fooled? Resident Evil's 1 and 2 didn't permit too much control either, and we loved those games. Players could walk, run, change weapons, mix stuff and find keys. All of that remains consistent with Gun Survivor - it just feels odd because you're using a gun to do everything.
