Evolutionary fighting game bound for PlayStation 2?
Capcom Japan are working on a sequel to Power Stone, the addictive, free-roaming Dreamcast fighter, and have plans to bring it to the next-generation PlayStation.
We reached Capcom Entertainment today, who responded positively, "Yes, Power Stone is a very popular game, and the response it's received is great," a representative explained. "It's a new take on fighting, and we see a big future for it. (Capcom) Japan have said they’re working on Power Stone 2, but they haven't said what system it'll come out on just yet. They are still in the planning and concept stages of the game, and lots of artwork and sketches are being created right now".
It's no surprise that Capcom are considering Sony's new system, as they usually support all consoles for their games and have already said they will make games for PlayStation 2. One industry source said: "It'll definitely come. Capcom would be foolish not to bring it to PlayStation 2".
Power Stone is the first Capcom game to break completely free of the Street Fighter reigns and in many ways redefines the fighting genre. The company's first 3D fighter, Star Gladiator, started the trend for Capcom, but doesn't break free of the Street Fighter mould, and hasn't grown in popularity like Power Stone. Rival Schools was also well liked, but felt in many ways like Street Fighter "lite" in 3D.
