RPG maker plans 12 games for the fiscal year in Japan
Over the weekend, Square held their annual stockholder and investor relations meeting to reveal future plans for sales, company expansion, and to reveal annoyingly small titbits on their upcoming games. Although predictably conservative in what they revealed, Square nonetheless brought new information to light that didn't focus on finances or stockholders directly.
The company plans to bring 12 games to the PlayStation within the Japanese fiscal year - theoretically, that's one game each month, but it's also more than the world was aware of. With previously released games such as Cyberorg, Chocobo Racing, Final Fantasy VIII, Racing Lagoon, and Saga Frontier 2 in retail stores, there are still seven more games expected. Announced and upcoming titles include Dew Prism, Front Mission 3, and Seiken Densetsu: Legend of Mana. Parasite Eve 2 was shown with a wink and a nudge at E3, so that's a shoe-in, though it hasn't been officially announced.
A thinking man would tally that as nine. So assuming that Final Fantasy IX exists (and it does), as Digicube previously announced on their site two weeks ago, there are only two more, which could be anyone's guess (Brave Fencer Musashiden 2, Chrono Trigger 2, or possibly a new game by the name of Vagrant Story). Square are reportedly planning on revealing one of them next month, so we'll keep you informed.
At the conference, Square reported that last year they released 11 titles all on the PlayStation, and sold 6.24 million units. With 12 games this year (all on the PlayStation), the company plans to push 6.7 million units, just above last year's sum. The company's ongoing series favourite, Final Fantasy VIII, sold more than $3 million worth of units in the last fiscal year.
