Downloadable Dreamcast Games Coming to Japan Next Year

Sega of Japan working on a cable modem and downloadable gaming

Sega Enterprises and Jupiter Telecommunications Co. will begin a program that may result in downloadable gaming for certain lucky Dreamcast owners in Japan by next spring.

The program will begin testing this December as Dreamcast machines and cable modems are handed out to 200 cable subscribers in Tokyo's Suginami Ward. It's expected that the recipients of the hardware will also be given free Internet access. The tests will begin with simple email and website access, but the real area of interest comes next spring as participants in the program will be able to download games from Sega's servers and take part in online gaming. Details on the games themselves have yet to be revealed, but we're all hoping Sega are shooting for more than simple card games.

Don't get too excited just yet, Sega fanatics. This program is only a test, after all, and it currently applies only to Japan. We'll keep you informed should anything develop on the home front.
