New Details on Shenmue: Chapter Two

Japanese won't cut it for Ryo this time around

Reports from Japan reveal a few new details on chapter two of Shenmue. It's been known for a long time now that the game will take place primarily in Hong Kong, but it turns out that much of the speaking will be in Cantonese, as opposed to Japanese. In fact, Sega of Japan and AM2 recently posted a job opportunity for anyone who can read and write Cantonese.

So, you're thinking, "I just spent five years learning Japanese. Now I gots ta' learn Chinese too?" Never fear, little Johnny Importer. The game will feature full Japanese subtitles for everything the average Japanese speaker wouldn't understand.

This all sounds like it's in line with what we saw of part one, but we're left wondering how Japanese-speaking Ryo will manage to cope with the Cantonese of mainland China and Hong Kong. We'll have to wait until June, the game's current intended release date, to find out.
