3dfx announce Voodoo4 and Voodoo5

3dfx have announced their new Voodoo Scalable Architecture technology. The initial advanced processor, the VSA-100, will be at the heart of the next generation of Voodoo cards - Voodoo4 and Voodoo5.

"The VSA-100 processor enables the Voodoo4 and Voodoo5 product lines to substantially raise the performance and quality of 3D graphics on the PC," said Michael Howse, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing at 3dfx Interactive. "By launching two product lines based on the VSA-100, 3dfx are able to offer a broad range of performance and price targets to both retail and OEM customers."

The Voodoo4 family of products is aimed at the mainstream user. The 4500 model will be available in both PCI and AGP versions and will feature a single VSA-100 processor and 32Mb of graphics memory. Expect to pay about £149.

As for the Voodoo5s, the 5000 PCI will have dual VSA-100 processors, 32Mb of graphics memory and a price tag of around £199. The 5500 AGP model will also sport dual VSA-100s, but will be graced with a full 64Mb of graphics memory, hence the expected price tag of £249.

Impressive, eh? But not exactly hardcore. The big boys will be demanding the Voodoo5 6000 AGP, the Escort Cosworth of graphics cards. Featuring four VSA-100 processors and 128Mb of graphics memory, the 6000 is a handsome beast, weighing in at around £449.

Voodoo4 and Voodoo5 are expected to ship in March 2000, so start saving now!
