Merrill Lynch Predicts Wild PlayStation2 Sales

Merrill Lynch forecast phenomenally bullish future for PlayStation2 in the next four years

In a recent report from Merrill Lynch, the investment firm predicted that Sony would sell more than 100 million PlayStation2s by the year 2004, a more than positive sign on the company's likelihood of success in broadening the videogame business to mass entertainment proportions.

With the prediction of more than 100 million PlayStation2s to be sold between March 2000 and March 2004, the company suggested that a whopping 960 million software units would also sell through to consumers. Rounding off figures, this prediction is about double that of Sony's current sell-through in both hardware and software for the PlayStation, which has sold 65 million hardware units and 510 million software units through September.

The report is a forecast, but it's based on figures that Sony themselves have predicted, based on prior success, and inside information that Sony have given to Merrill Lynch regarding their full plans. This, of course, is at least the second report Merrill Lynch have published on PlayStation2, the first coming just prior to the announcement of PS2 in September.
