The cult film that reinvented the meaning of sci-fi WILL be an official game
The hottest movie to hit the science fiction world this year was The Matrix, and after speaking to several sources in both the videogame and movie industry, we learned today that Larry and Andy Wachowski, the brothers who wrote and directed the movie, are officially going to make a videogame based on the film. New information points to it arriving on PlayStation2 in 2002 and that the game will tie in with the two movie sequels.
"If things work out the way we want them to, the videogame will be released when the next movie comes out and it will actually have something to do with the movie," Larry and Andy revealed.
As you may know, the Wachowski brothers did speak casually with the creator of Konami's Metal Gear Solid, and many sites thought that the marriage of MGS and The Matrix couldn't be better. The rumours of a deal proved to be false, though. However, Konami are still rumoured to be one of the top candidates to make the game, as are Shiny Entertainment, among others.
We spoke with Dave Perry, President of Shiny Entertainment, about the game of The Matrix. "I can't say much, but I've spoken with them [the Wachowski brothers] about making the game," said Perry. "Not all movies make great videogames, but this one would. Andy and Larry love playing games and they know what they want to do. They really care and they want total control over it. I was actually offered the chance to make a Matrix game about two years ago, but I was too busy with Messiah. I've spoken with them again since the movie came out, but now there are lots of people in the running. I'd love to make it but deals in Hollywood take a long time to complete, and it'll be a long time before any of this gets settled."
None of the other companies we spoke to would come forward with an official answer, but we know that Namco, Capcom and Eidos aren't on the roster, and that the teams who have been approached all have PS2 Tool Kits.
Spencer Lamm, Editor of The Matrix comics, said, "Will it be on PlayStation2? I can't say for sure, but how could it go anywhere else?"
It's a long time between now and the year 2002, but we'll keep you up to date with all the latest news as it happens.
